A new approach to women’s healthcare has been developed through the research activities of Thomas W. Hilgers, MD, a specialist in reproductive medicine and surgery at the National Center for Women’s Health in Omaha, Nebraska. This program is affiliated with Creighton University School of Medicine.
NaProTECHNOLOGY (Natural Procreative Technology) has its major difference from what is currently being extensively utilized through its ability to cooperate with the natural mechanisms of human fertility and the menstrual cycle. NaProTECHNOLOGY can do this because of the utilization of the Creighton Model FertilityCareTM System which is a standardized modification of the Billings Ovulation Method. This standardization makes the Creighton Model especially useable in the areas of women’s health. While this system can be used as a method of family planning, it also provides the biological markers for the successful evaluation and treatment of such conditions as recurrent ovarian cysts, long and irregular cycles, premenstrual syndrome, postpartum depression, infertility, recurrent miscarriage and a whole host of other conditions seen in women of reproductive age.
The focus of NaProTECHNOLOGY is to look at the root cause of the underlying problem, and by assisting medically to achieve better health in the women who are impacted by these conditions, it generally produces better results than the current programs utilizing artificial reproductive technologies of different types.
Dr. Hilgers is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Creighton University School of Medicine, a co-developer of the Creighton Model System and the main developer of NaProTECHNOLOGY. There are medical, surgical and perinatal applications to NaProTECHNOLOGY including studies that describe the techniques that have led to the development of “near adhesion-free” surgery (Journal of Gynecologic Surgery, March 2010).
